MSc Business & Finance student Juanita offers her advice on ensuring you stay happy and healthy during your studies.

Embarking on a Masters degree in a new country represents an exciting opportunity for personal and professional growth.

From my first day at WBS, I immersed myself in the multicultural environment, where the diversity of ideas and cultures enriched my academic experience. Behind this journey full of learning and discovery, there is an essential aspect that should not be overlooked: mental wellbeing.

Throughout my journey in the MSc course, I have witnessed the invaluable support provided by the administrative team and professors at the university. This support has been crucial in overcoming some emotional challenges the change in country, language, and culture has posed.

Building friendships with my cohort

It is crucial to recognise that emotional wellbeing directly influences academic performance, and the support received has been key to maintaining an optimal balance.

One of the outstanding facets of my experience at WBS has been the exchange of ideas and cultures among students and professors.

The spaces created for debate and interaction have significantly contributed to building a solid financial knowledge base, but they have also served as a refuge to disconnect from academia and strengthen bonds of friendship.

Participation in extracurricular activities, such as visits to local markets, or visits from alpacas, has been fundamental in fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual support.

However, disconnection should not be limited solely to recreational activities. It is essential to incorporate practices that promote mental health into the daily routine.

How to manage your workload at university

Communication with friends and family, balanced nutrition, and regular physical exercise are indispensable pillars for maintaining comprehensive wellbeing. I recognise the challenges involved in balancing these practices with the demanding academic workload, but it is imperative to always prioritise mental health.

From my personal experience, I recommend establishing a schedule that includes time dedicated to study, but also moments for physical exercise and leisure.

Reserving weekends to completely disconnect allows for recharging energies and enjoying activities that nourish the spirit. Additionally, it is crucial to be attentive to signs of stress or emotional exhaustion and not hesitate to seek help when necessary.

What wellbeing support does Warwick offer?

In this regard, the support I received from the MSc recruitment team was invaluable. Their willingness to schedule meetings with professors and explore different assistance options demonstrates a genuine commitment to the well-being of students.

Promoting a culture of openness and communication, where emotional challenges are not seen as a weakness but as an opportunity to grow and strengthen, is crucial.

In conclusion, the university experience goes beyond the academic realm. It is a period of personal growth and comprehensive development, where mental health plays a fundamental role.

Prioritising emotional wellbeing not only enhances academic performance, but also enriches the entire university experience.

At WBS, an atmosphere of support and camaraderie is fostered, allowing students to thrive not only academically but also personally.
