Top tips from an MSc student

Where are the best places to study on campus? Where would you go to find the best lunch? We asked our ambassador, Jakob, to share his top tips.

Best places to study on campus / at WBS?

With running the risk of threatening its future tranquility: Senate House! It is situated on the edge of campus, around a 5-10-minute walk from WBS, and very few people know it. There are several quiet study areas in the building, which also house the University’s administration, but there are also study options in the lobby area – a more open space. Particularly on the weekend, there are only a handful of students in the whole building, which I love!

For group work, I usually like to book a room at the new PG Hub at the Junction. But if you forgot to book a room there, you can try to get a space in the WBS Postgraduate Learning space on the ground floor, which houses nice group working tables, including monitors.

Alternatively, I would suggest studying at WBS Café after closing time (particularly the space at the very back with the lovely lounge chairs) or grabbing a place in any empty lecture/seminar room at WBS.

Best places to socialise on campus?

I would say to socialise with your cohort, just arrive a bit early for lectures, which is when you will find many students already chatting away! Also, the area in front of the first-floor Postgraduate Study space has become somewhat of a social hotspot, occupied by students that need a break from studying. Additionally, I have also had countless lovely chats with academic staff and students at WBS café, so I would deem it a fantastic place to meet students from other cohorts in WBS.

In terms of environments where one can mix with students from across the University, I would probably recommend Curiositea for a coffee chat or – just one floor above – Terrace Bar in the evenings.

Best places to eat on campus?

The clear winner in this category is the Indian Food Tent, of which I don’t even know the official name. It operates most days of the week next to the Red Rocket food truck at the Computer Science Building, about a 5-minute walk from WBS. It is outstanding value for money and has pretty authentic Masala Dosa (confirmed by my Indian friends)!

I have recently – along with many of my fellow students – become a regular visitor to the newly opened Benugo Bar & Kitchen at Warwick Arts Centre. It’s incredibly Instagrammable, with an abundance of plants in the restaurant and makes great pizzas – what else would one want.

Best workshops, guest lectures, careers fairs you have attended?

The best guest lecture I have attended was a Management Insight Speaker event held by award-winning ethnographer Nick Leon. It was amazing to see the films he makes as part of his work and how he captures consumption behaviour for decision-makers in companies. I particularly loved the chat I had with him and a couple of WBS academics about the applicability of ethnography in different industries after the event.

In terms of workshops, my favourite was definitely Presentation Skills with a WBS Professor who previously worked at the Royal Shakespeare Company. We received insights on everything surrounding a good presentation in the highly interactive session – from speech to posture!
