Full-time MBA participant Yun Chen shares her experience on the International Elective Module at Aalto University in Helsinki.
From Warwick to Milan: exploring a new business culture through my PIM Exchange
As a member of the Partnership in International Management (PIM) Network, Warwick Business School Full-time MBA participants are offered the opportunity to extend their study and apply for an exchange at one of our partner business schools.
From modules that align perfectly with his career aspirations, to post-event aperitivos, hear from Kieran as he reflects on the highlights of his time at SDA Bocconi, Milan.
What is the PIM Exchange?
An opportunity to study abroad, immerse yourself in new cultures, gain a broader perspective on global business practices, and build an international network.
Why did you choose to apply for the PIM Exchange?
Participating in the exchange program allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, explore a different academic environment, and immerse myself in a new culture. It’s the perfect blend of personal growth and professional development. The idea of studying at another top-tier business school while experiencing life in a new country was too enticing to pass up. Any opportunity like this is rare, and I knew I had to seize it.
Where was your PIM Exchange and why did you choose this location?
I chose SDA Bocconi in Milan, Italy, a dynamic hub for fashion and finance, because of its outstanding reputation with a strong focus on strategy and finance, which align perfectly with my career aspirations. Milan's vibrant culture and thriving business scene are compelling, along with the opportunity to learn a new language, an area where I've admittedly struggled. Finally, of course, the promise of incredible food and aperitivos sealed the deal.
Tell us a bit about what you covered whilst on the Exchange
The program offered a deep dive into strategy, economics, financial planning, and capital markets. My favourite module focused on banks and capital markets, exploring how commercial and investment banks integrate into the financial ecosystem. The professor ended the course by urging us to strive for excellence, a sentiment that could seem cliché but resonated deeply in that moment. It was a meaningful reminder of the privilege, opportunities, and responsibilities we all have as MBA students and future leaders.
What co-curricular opportunities were there on your Exchange?
The exchange provided plenty of co-curricular highlights, including networking events with industry leaders and talks featuring executives and subject matter experts. One standout feature? The post-event aperitivos with Aperol, prosecco, and Milanese risotto. These weren’t just snacks; they were a cultural institution that kept conversations flowing and executives lingering longer. It was networking with a distinctly Italian flair, and, honestly, the UK could learn something from this approach.
What benefits did you get from participating in the Exchange?
The exchange was a truly transformative experience. It gave me a richer understanding of global business, introduced me to an incredible network of people, and helped clarify my career goals. I walked away with a renewed perspective, and a deeper appreciation for how interconnected the professional world is. It was the defining chapter of my MBA journey.
What was life like outside of the classroom?
Life in Milan was an adventure in its own right. Between social outings, discovering amazing restaurants, and weekend trips across Italy, I had the time of my life. Our group bonded immediately, and within the first week, a local student took us on an unforgettable day trip to Portofino. From spontaneous gelato stops to exploring iconic towns, my time outside the classroom was just as enriching, if not more so, than my academic experience.
What was your favourite part of the Exchange?
The people, without a doubt. I was warmly welcomed into the program, and people often forgot I was an exchange student. Our exchange group made it a tradition to meet weekly for lunch, sharing stories and reflecting on our experiences. The connections I made are memories I’ll cherish forever.
Would you recommend future Full-time MBA participants apply?
Absolutely! The exchange program is an extraordinary opportunity to challenge yourself academically, grow personally, and expand your network in ways that will benefit you long after graduation. It’s a transformative experience that enhances both your MBA journey and your personal development. If you have the chance to participate, seize it with both hands!
If you’re considering an exchange at Bocconi, I’d be more than happy to chat and share more about my experience.
