WBS Distinguished Seminar Series - Professor Tine Köhler

Lunch beforehand from 12:00 - 12:30.

In this presentation, Tine will talk about an ongoing research project in which she studies the emergence, reenactment, and resolution of incivility in teams through a longitudinal qualitative observational research design. Incivility is defined as "low-intensity deviant behavior[s], with ambiguous intent to harm the target, in violation of workplace norms for mutual respect" (Andersson & Pearson, 1999, p. 457). In multicultural work groups, differences in cultural communication norms create differences in expectations for respectful behaviors. These differences often lead to clashes and experiences of incivility, making multicultural work groups an ideal context for the study of how incivility is created and reinforced. In the current presentation, Tine demonstrates the utility of an interactive conceptualization and assessment of incivility rather than the currently existing static conceptualization. Feedback to further develop this project will be much appreciated.
