Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Ayalenesh Tafesse. I was born in Ethiopia and raised in South Africa. I work in finance and have been fortunate to have built my career around something I am extremely passionate about; contributing to the growth and development of the African continent.
What motivated you to apply for a scholarship? What does the scholarship mean to you?
Pursuing an MBA is a big investment, so it’s best to consider all your options when it comes to funding your studies. Aside from the obvious financial benefit, WBS scholarships require you to demonstrate that you are a Change Maker that strives for excellence. For me, being awarded the scholarship was a vote of confidence; it was encouraging to know that WBS also saw that potential in me.
How have you been championing equality, both in industry and within your MBA?
Paying-it-forward is a huge driver for me. Important parts of my career journey have been shaped by people who took the time to share their experiences and impart valuable advice. For me, being able to provide that mentorship and support to others has been a way to champion equality.
How have you been embodying Warwick Business School’s Change Maker values and having an impact on your sector/society during your MBA? What impact has the scholarship had on your academic and personal goals?
When I started my MBA, I made an effort to choose modules and assignment topics that I had little experience in. It was really gratifying to be on a journey of constant discovery. Surprisingly, I found that this mindset unconsciously carried over into my work and life. Over the past year I have taken on tasks and had adventures that I normally wouldn’t have. This has contributed immensely to what I view as possible and allowed me to make contributions in ways that I’d never have considered previously.
Do you have any advice to others considering applying for a scholarship?
As cliché as it is, ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained.’ Explore all of your options, do your best and just go for it!
In terms of the scholarship application, be authentic and write about what you value. The writing process is so much easier when you truly resonate with the topic. It will also allow your voice to shine through.
