Global Online MBA alum Ola Åkesson reveals his motivation for applying for the MBA and how the programme helped him realise his career aspirations.
What did you do before embarking on your MBA?
In the years leading up to my MBA, I spent nine years at the same company, steadily progressing through various roles. I started in sales and eventually became a sales manager, where I had the privilege of building and leading a team. Later, I joined the COO's team to spearhead new initiatives within the organisation. While these experiences were valuable, I began to feel a growing desire for change and a new challenge,
What prompted you to study for an MBA?
I found myself at a career crossroads. Despite applying to numerous interesting roles, I received little response. I had already supplemented my work experience with courses in project management and organisational development. Recognising the need to enhance my skill set and broaden my knowledge base, I explored educational opportunities that would allow me to continue working while studying. I also wanted credentials that would help me get noticed by recruiters. The Warwick Business School Global Online MBA programme appealed to me due to its consistent top ranking, the blend of online learning, on-campus weeks and the flexibility it offered.
Post-MBA, have you realised your career aspirations?
My career aspiration was to have a role where I could make a meaningful impact on those around me and help them to reach their full potential. I wanted to think creatively, set high-level strategies, and execute them both within and outside the organisation. I aspired to build something new that makes a difference, be challenged, and learn from others who are experts in their field.
In my current role as Chief Revenue Officer at Dintero, I get to do this and much more. We are a close-knit team of about 20, building a leader in the payments space. I feel fortunate to work with bright people and put into practice what I've learned through both the MBA and my 16 years of work experience.
Prior to joining Dintero, I had the opportunity to be part of Attensi, a leader in corporate learning that combines psychology with gamified simulations and innovative technologies such as AI and VR, resulting in real behavioural changes. I was also part of the hypergrowth fintech company, Klarna, during a time when we scaled from 1,700 to 5,000 employees and a valuation of $5.5 billion to $45.6 billion - an immense opportunity for learning.
The Warwick Global Online MBA has made me a better leader, strengthened my financial acumen, and given me tools to innovate and drive growth in today's changing business environment. Moreover, making the MBA alongside work has been a learning experience. I've learned the need for hard prioritisation and how to acquire, test, and apply the new skills as I go. I've learned to unlearn old truths when they no longer apply and to look at challenges from fresh and different perspectives.
What plans do you have for the future?
My goal is to continue doing what I love and build Dintero into leading fintech. The MBA experience has equipped me with knowledge and skills essential for personal and professional growth. I am genuinely excited about the future and the ongoing prospects for learning, development, and growth.
