Muhammad Bilal
BSc International Management with Digital Business (current student)

Tell us a bit about yourself, and what you studied?

I am Muhammad Bilal, a 20-year-old student who is currently pursuing a BSc in Management at Warwick Business School (WBS). I completed my Foundation year at Warwick University. Originally from Pakistan, I did my secondary schooling there, and from a young age, I have been inclined towards the fields of business and management.  I would describe myself as a quick learner who is detail-oriented and enjoys working in collaborative environments. In my free time, I can often be found playing pool at the student union. I am very enthusiastic and enjoy watching cricket. Furthermore, having lived in Arab countries, I have developed a fondness for their cuisine.

What attracted you to WBS, why did you choose to study here?

My father ran his own business, and I was exposed to the thrill and challenges of being your own boss from an early age. However, I knew that to truly succeed in today's globalised marketplace, I needed world-class training and a solid educational foundation. I was drawn to WBS due to its exceptional standing and global rankings for its business programmes.

Apart from its accolades, I was impressed by WBS's dedication to developing a global mindset through initiatives such as study abroad programmes and a diverse student body. I was particularly intrigued by the chance to pursue a management degree that would equip me to work effectively across different cultures and markets. I believe that WBS will provide me with the necessary global skill set, extensive network, and entrepreneurial mindset to eventually lead my own multinational enterprise.

What is the best thing about the degree? For example, classmates, group work, lecturers, visiting staff.

One of the highlights of my degree programme has been the engaging lecturers who have made the course material relevant to real-world business scenarios. Additionally, I have enjoyed the opportunity to take impactful modules, such as Digital Business and Corporate Entrepreneurship, and the diverse group of classmates I have met from around the world.

The smaller seminar-style classes have allowed for more in-depth discussions, and having classmates with real work experience in fields such as consulting, or start-ups has elevated the overall classroom dialogue. Although the coursework can be challenging at times, the friends I have made through group projects and these intimate modules have made the experience truly valuable and enriching.

How did you find having a personal tutor, have they helped you throughout your studies?

Having a personal tutor at WBS has been a beneficial aspect of my experience. My tutor has been readily available and approachable whenever I have questions about module selection, exam preparation, or just need some general advice. She functions as a trustworthy source of advice, serving as an advocate for my holistic growth. Each term, our individual meetings offer me the opportunity to obtain customised feedback that is tailored to my unique circumstances.

What has inspired you most throughout your studies?

I have been particularly inspired by the emphasis on entrepreneurial spirit found in many of the modules here and the guidance on turning ideas into successful business ventures. The most inspiring aspect of my time at WBS has been the numerous opportunities to learn directly from experts and practitioners in various fields and industries. Being able to see first-hand how cutting-edge technologies and business strategies are being applied has been incredibly motivating. For example, during my Digital Business module last term, we had a fascinating seminar where police officers came in to demonstrate how they are utilising virtual reality for training simulations. The immersive VR scenarios they use to prepare officers for high-stress situations really brought to life the power of emerging technologies like VR in practical ways.

Another module that consistently inspired me was Venture Capital (VC). Our professor, who spent over a decade as a successful VC investor before transitioning into academia, provided us with a true insider's perspective into the high-stakes world of venture funding. We were also fortunate to have numerous guest speakers and lecturers who were CEOs, founders of major corporations and unicorn start-ups. Hearing about their personal journeys, key decision points, and lessons learned was incredibly motivating.

What sort of support did you receive from the careers team? How has that helped you?

The careers team at WBS has provided invaluable guidance and resources to aid me in effectively navigating the job search process. From the outset, they assisted me in crafting a compelling CV and cover letters that emphasised my unique experiences and strengths. The careers advisors provided detailed feedback tailored to the roles and industries I was targeting, ensuring that my application materials made an impactful first impression. Additionally, they provided intensive interview preparation, including mock interviews where I could practice my responses and receive candid feedback on my body language, tone, and how to answer challenging questions more effectively.

Moreover, the careers team offered crucial insights into exploring potential career paths that best aligned with my interests and strengths. With their expertise, I was able to identify opportunities that I may have otherwise overlooked, ultimately finding the right fit. Lastly, the careers team facilitated invaluable networking opportunities through their events and job fairs. I was able to directly interact with company representatives across industries and even apply or interview for roles on the spot, significantly expanding my professional horizons.

Are you a member of any SU clubs or societies? What benefits did you get from that?

I am currently an active member of the Pakistan Society and Islamic Society. The Pakistan Society is a cultural society that celebrates Pakistani music, cuisine, festivals, and traditions through various events. Meanwhile, the Islamic Society is a faith-based group that conducts speaker sessions, charity initiatives, spiritual discussions, and more. Being a part of these societies has significantly enhanced my overall university experience by enabling me to embrace my identities and make meaningful connections while maintaining a balance between academics.

What do you aim to do once you graduate?

Once I graduate, I aim to gain experience in the field of digital marketing and entrepreneurship. Ideally, I'd like to work at a major tech company or start-up to further develop my skills. However, my ultimate goal is to launch my own digital venture and be at the forefront of new products or services that create value for consumers globally.

Do you feel that your degree is preparing you for your next steps?

Absolutely, the combination of core business disciplines and specialised modules like Digital Business are giving me a solid foundation to transition into industry or entrepreneurship after graduating.

What top tip would you give to prospective undergraduate students who are deciding if WBS is the right place for them?

WBS is a top option for students seeking global exposure and practical experience. The programmes provide real-world scenarios through case studies, collaborative projects, and guest speakers. WBS also offers study-abroad opportunities and a vibrant entrepreneurial community, complete with pitch competitions, incubator resources, and networking events. WBS's rigorous academic programme and global, hands-on, and entrepreneurial approach make it the perfect choice for students who want to succeed in today's rapidly changing global economy.
