Why study BSc Economics and Management?

04 December 2024

Associate Professor and WBS course director of BSc Economics and Management shares why students should consider our new joint degree with the University of Warwick’s renowned economics department.

What is a BSc in Economics and Management?

A Bachelor of Science in Economics and Management is a joint degree that combines the theoretical and analytical knowledge conferred by studies in economics with the practical skills needed for management in businesses and organisations. Students are enrolled through the Economics Department and split their modules between Economics and Warwick Business School. This interdisciplinary degree exposes students to peers and research-led learning in both the BSc Economics and BSc Management degrees at the University of Warwick, each of which is ranked number one in the UK for its field by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024.

What are the key skills developed in a BSc in Economics and Management?

In Years 1 and 2 students take core modules in both Economics and Management, which provide a critical understanding of key theories as well as practical skills which are transferable to any business environment. Years 2 and 3 also offer optional modules, which allow students to focus on their particular interests; these include, for instance, Industrial Economics: Market Economies; Entrepreneurial Finance and Venture Capital; International Business Strategy; Behavioural Economics; and Data Science for Economists. Throughout the degree, assessments include both formal examinations and coursework, including essays, presentations, and group projects.

What careers does the degree prepare you for, and how?

The joint degree prepares students for a wide range of careers, including consulting, data analytics, business management, finance, technology, and civil service. University-wide workshops, career fairs, and mock interview support complement this to ensure you have support throughout your time at Warwick. What’s more, the three-year degree can be extended to four with an optional placement year, which affords opportunities to apply skills and knowledge in a real work setting before the final year of study.

Why is Economics and Management a popular combination?

Students recognise the growing demand for graduates with a strong conceptual understanding of the market economy, the ability to analyse data, and practical management and leadership skills in an organisational setting. Professor Mark Johnson, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programmes at Warwick Business School, highlights this need: “Our ongoing dialogue with employers has revealed a real need from businesses and organisations for graduates who can combine management skills with an understanding of economics and some of the tools needed to navigate the economic landscape.” The BSc in Economics and Management seeks to fill this gap.
