Executive MBA (London) participant Hugo Deed discusses how the programme is helping to build his business acumen after a career in the military.
From the military to building businesses
Winner of the Heropreneurs award in 2020, Gary Tucker, shares his experience on the Executive Diploma in Strategy and Innovation
I was extremely honoured to receive a Heropreneurs Award for the Warwick Executive Diploma in December 2020. After leaving the military in 2016 after 23 years, I formed Network Training Partnership, which has since led to the formation of a second company, PATAM, which produces digital compliance identity solutions.
I opted for the Strategy and Innovation Diploma as I could only commit to a year's part-time study rather than the more intensive MBA programme. I had considered applying for an MBA previously on the transitioning from the forces, but I couldn't allocate the time due to trying to grow my business. The Executive Diploma has proven to be the ideal solution to improve my understanding of strategy within the corporate sector.
The Executive Diploma in Strategy and Innovation has been a significant undertaking whilst running my businesses and managing a young family. However, the ability to study the course both online and in-person at The Shard has made it achievable.
Initially, I was worried that the subjects covered on the diploma would not be relevant to my business. However, the course served as an invaluable 'deep dive' into our operations, strategy, and development. The course itself is well-structured, engaging and designed to take everyone out of their comfort zone. Plus, the course has an exceptional cohort from across the globe, including people from well-respected companies both nationally and internationally. I am continually astounded by my fellow course mates' talents, knowledge, and levels of passion.
I would strongly encourage anyone with a military background to apply for the Heropreneurs award. It is a significant commitment, but the experience is invaluable and will undoubtedly enhance your abilities in a business environment.
The MBA and Executive Diploma will undoubtedly enhance anyone's CV and employment opportunities. I have used the models, frameworks and knowledge gained to improve our business output throughout the year. Anyone attending either course will hugely benefit from the qualifications and experience.
Thanks to Heropreneurs and Warwick Business School for their continued support of military personnel. They are truly superb and make a significant impact in the lives of those who serve and their families.
