5 steps to a successful MSc experience

Current MSc Finance student Anar shares his advice on making the most of your Masters journey at Warwick Business School.

WBS has offered me the privilege of acquiring an abundance of knowledge, whilst thoroughly enjoying university life. I really enjoy the course material as it’s as much practical as theoretical. The professors, students, and professional team in particular are extremely helpful in unlocking my potential throughout the course.

Here, I will try to summarise my findings on how to get the most from of your Masters studies.

1) Plan your career objectives

It’s important to have career planning from the moment you start your course. The Masters careers team are very helpful in terms of CV and cover letter preparation, interview tips, and generating leads in your industry.

Their guidance on the job market, career paths, and connecting you with potential employers will be extremely helpful to you in determining your interest area. Most importantly, I believe having a clear career objective will help you stay motivated throughout your studies.

2) Join societies and clubs

I believe participating in extracurricular activities will make your student life more exciting and memorable. Joining clubs or societies that align with your interests will provide you with opportunities to meet new people and broaden your network.

I am personally a member of both the Warwick Chess Club and Turkish Society, and I have made lots of friends at events and socials - it’s totally worth it!

3) Study regularly

Particularly in the MSc Finance course, the modules are very intensive. Therefore, studying regularly will help you to handle the materials on time and with high quality. It may be really difficult to catch up if you fall behind - I personally experienced that.

Try to stay ahead of the game by keeping up with your coursework, and revising regularly. Learning and developing at this reputable school is always rewarding.

4) Keep in contact with academics

Professors in WBS organise weekly office hours to enable students to discuss any topics, queries or concerns on about your work.

Utilising those hours will help you to grasp the materials in a deeper manner, as well as to gain insights regarding the practical implications. The professors are there to help you, so take advantage of it.

5) Get to know your coursemates

A key part of studying at WBS is expanding my network. Building lasting friendships with your coursemates will optimise your experience, both academically and socially.

Study together, share notes, discuss topics, and learn from each other's experiences. You never know, your classmates may become your future colleagues or business partners.

In conclusion, as Benjamin Franklin once said, "an investment in education pays the best interest". So enjoy it, and make the most out of your time at WBS!
