MSc Business Analytics student Ghazi sat down to take us through how he keeps on top of his studies while maintaining a healthy body and mind.
Making the most of my university experience
MSc Management of Information Systems & Digital Innovation student, Maral, explains how she keeps on top of her mental health while enjoying her academic journey at WBS.
On my way towards changing career paths from construction to information systems field, I couldn’t wish for a better way to start my journey as a Chevening Scholar at WBS. I know the excitement (and maybe a touch of nervousness) that comes with embarking on this incredible experience!
I wanted to share some insights and tips from my perspective, hoping to help new WBS students navigate the exhilarating, yet demanding world of postgraduate studies.
Life as an MSc student at WBS
My WBS experience has been phenomenal. The outstanding quality of education with engaging classes, supportive professors, and the diverse student body creates a vibrant multicultural environment, in which you can exchange ideas with people from all corners of the globe.
In this short period of time, you will connect with so many like-minded people who also joined WBS as future changemakers and you can collaborate together to look to bettering this world!
We should never underestimate the power of networking. It’s no secret, that any new person you meet in your life knows something you didn’t know before.
It’s hard to pick out on standout moment from my time at WBS, as you’re being involved in so many different activities, festivals provided by WBS and events organised by Career Plus Team.
But for me, it would be guest lectures from CEOs of multinational corporations, renowned economists, and thought leaders sharing their experiences.
Learning from such accomplished individuals provides invaluable insights and inspiration to make a change, and impact on your chosen area - leveraging what you learned throughout this life-changing experience.
Remember though - studies aren't everything. Striking a balance between academia and personal wellbeing is crucial. Here's what helps me keep my mental health in check:
- Planning is everything
A well-structured schedule with dedicated study slots and equally important relaxation periods prevents burnout. Utilise WBS' excellent online resources and career services to plan your workload effectively.
- Embrace the community
WBS offers a plethora of student societies catering to diverse interests. I joined the Warwick Volunteers which allows me to unwind with friends after a long day of lectures by giving back to the community.
There's something for everyone. Be it sports, dancing clubs, cultural societies, or a picnic time, you can not only catch up with classmates - but also treat each other with your national cuisine meal. Explore more about different cultures and luckily our campus has everything for this to offer you!
- Step outside of your comfort zone
When the demands become challenging, venturing into historical Coventry or beautiful Leamington Spa city centres provide a refreshing escape. Exploring historic sightseeing, museums, or simply grabbing a coffee with friends can do wonders for your mental wellbeing.
- Don’t forget ‘me time’
Try to schedule regular study breaks, whether it’s a just exploring nature by walking around our large and green campus grounds.
Find outdoor activities that stimulate you, or simply focus on the things you get inspired by. These short respites help recharge your focus and prevent mental fatigue.
- Stay connected with loved ones
Keeping in touch with family and friends back home, through messaging and phone or video calls, provides a sense of support and reminds you of what truly matters.
- Set realistic goals
Don't overload yourself. Break down large tasks into manageable chunks and celebrate your achievements along the way.
It’s okay to fail sometimes. Success isn’t just about what you have done, or what you have accomplished, but it’s about what you have done with those accomplishments, who you’ve lifted up and made better, what you inspire others to do.
- Learn to say no
It's okay to decline an extra social commitment if you need more study time. Your classmates and friends will understand.
It's okay to take a day off if you're feeling overwhelmed. Catch up on sleep, listen to calming music, or do something you enjoy as a well-rested mind is a productive mind.
- Enjoy it!
Be social, and remember, you're not alone. WBS offers fantastic student support services, from dedicated wellbeing advisors to peer mentors. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need guidance or support.
Embrace the opportunities, challenge yourself, and most importantly, enjoy your time at WBS!
It’s a place that makes you feel a part of a global family for life, which you'll cherish for years to come.
