Starting your journey to WBS

Our MSc ambassadors share their student journey, from applying to WBS to what happens when you arrive.

While shortlisting universities based on their reputation, course content, and ranking their business courses, Warwick Business School (WBS) definitely stood out to me. The range of interesting modules within the MSc International Business course really appealed and influenced my decision to apply.  I applied to WBS in mid-February along with all the required documentation and I received an unconditional offer letter within three weeks of submitting my application, which I was overjoyed about.

On accepting my offer, I was required to pay the deposit fee to confirm my place and after this I submitted my accommodation preferences and received confirmation of my allocated accommodation in July. The next important step in my journey to WBS was completing my visa application, and fifteen days after attending my interview I was set to begin my next adventure at WBS.

When I arrived on campus luckily I had some leisure time to settle into my accommodation and explore the campus. During Welcome Week I had the opportunity to find out more about the facilities on campus and discover the great variety of sports clubs and societies available to students. On my first day of term WBS organised a course orientation which was really useful and giving me an overall insight into the business school, my course, the assessment methods and grading system. The MSc programme team also showed us how to access the WBS portal and library and I had the opportunity to interact with my new course mates and professors. Before my lectures started I also completed a few refresher courses such as Math to refresh my knowledge which really helped prepare me for my course.

“Congratulations! We are delighted to inform you that you have been made an offer to study at Warwick Business School”. As soon as I saw this line of my offer from Warwick Business School (WBS) my heart started pounding a bit faster as my new journey was about to begin.

When it came to shortlisting potential universities where I wanted to study for my MSc, WBS was definitely at the top of my list, and when I received my offer I was completely overwhelmed. When preparing to start at WBS I packed as many warm clothes as I possibly could (thanks to the student baggage allowance), as well as a few home comforts. In terms of preparing for my course I completed the refresher courses which are exclusively tailor-made for each postgraduate course. The refresher course helped me to prepare for my studies and refresh my knowledge of the key areas of business I would by focusing on throughout my course.

When I arrived on campus, during the first week of term, the university hosted Welcome Week which helped me to familiarise myself with my way around campus, learn more about my course,  and find out about the huge array of sports clubs and societies that I could join. It was also a fantastic opportunity to make new friends. With hundreds of events on offer during Welcome Week I would recommend future students make the most of every opportunity and participate as much as you can.

Undertaking an MSc is an essential part of my career plan that I believe will help me successfully achieve my future goals. My journey started three years ago when I was working in the finance and economics industry in my home country, the Sultanate of Oman, and decided that I wanted to complete a master’s degree. I prepared a list of top universities in the UK, comparing their international outlook, subjects, facilities and teaching methods.

WBS was at the top of my list for several reasons; the main reason was the range of modules that would provide me with the knowledge that I wanted to obtain. In addition to this the Business in Practice route would give me the opportunity to implement the skills and learnings from my previous work experience whilst adding further value to my CV. I also knew of several WBS alumni who had completed their masters’ degrees at WBS who had shared their experience with me and encouraged me to apply.

I found the application process very straightforward and once I received my unconditional offer for MSc Business & Finance I received continuous communication from the WBS Recruitment and Admissions team. As I was working full-time whilst preparing for my new journey at WBS, the communication and support I received from WBS helped me tremendously in making my preparations to move to the UK and join WBS. I really liked the fact that I received support in terms of facilitating accommodation requirements, I had the opportunity to speak to current students on my course and I was put in contact with the University of Warwick’s representative in my home country who helped me with my visa application.

I arrived in the UK a few days before the introductory week began in order to familiarise myself with the campus and to get used to my new life living in Coventry. The student accommodation team provided me with lots of useful information such as nearby grocery stores, hospitals, banks and transport links.  The Student Union (SU) also organised a tour of the campus and hosted some great ice-breaking activities allowing me to meet other international students. In terms of preparation for my course, I focused on reading about finance-related historic events, which has helped me understand my modules in greater detail.
