Inside the Accelerator MBA: Midway reflections

07 April 2025

A year into their Accelerator MBA, we catch up with Henry and Caroline to delve deeper into their experiences. Discover how the MBA is shaping their professional and personal growth, how they are leveraging networking opportunities, and the standout moments they’ve experienced in the programme so far.

How has the Accelerator MBA impacted your personal and professional growth so far?

Henry: The Accelerator MBA has given me more than just new knowledge, it’s provided the space to reflect on my career and be intentional about where I want to grow. It’s not often you get the chance to hit pause and really think about where you’re headed, and this programme has done that for me. Team assignments have been a real game-changer, helping me refine my leadership style and teamwork skills, which I’ve been able to apply immediately at work. Exposure to classmates with diverse experiences and approaches has made me more curious and open to different perspectives. I’ve also become better at identifying the key aspects of a problem and implementing decisive, practical solutions at work. These skills, combined with a broader knowledge base, have helped me engage more credibly across different parts of the business, whether it’s operations, strategy, or finance.

Caroline: Pursuing an MBA at WBS has significantly enhanced my networking opportunities, a crucial aspect of professional growth in today’s competitive landscape.

Can you share a specific moment or experience that has been particularly transformative for you?

Henry: One standout moment for me was during the Corporate Reporting and Decision Making module. The highlight was a business simulation where each team managed a company, making strategic decisions about investment, production, HR, sustainability, marketing, and financing. These choices directly affected the company’s financial performance, reputation, and overall health, and we could see the impact of our strategies in real time. It so useful to experiment with bold ideas and learn from the outcomes, both good and bad. It was fascinating to apply knowledge from all the modules we’ve studied so far and see how everything came together. For me, it was a lightbulb moment that really justified the decision to pursue an MBA. Seeing the immediate, tangible results of our decisions made the learning process so much more engaging and meaningful.

Caroline: One of the standout features of the programme is its robust alumni network. This network has served as an invaluable conversation starter, allowing me to connect with colleagues within my organisation who share the same educational background. These connections often lead to insightful discussions about our experiences, challenges, and successes, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.

How have you found the networking opportunities within the programme?

Caroline: The CareersPlus and Employer Relations team at WBS have played a pivotal role in expanding my professional network. Their proactive approach in connecting students with industry professionals has been instrumental in my career development. Through various initiatives, I have had the opportunity to engage with individuals who have navigated similar career paths, gaining insights into their experiences and advice on potential next steps.

Additionally, WBS organises informal networking events, which allow students to meet peers from around the globe. These gatherings create a relaxed atmosphere where we can share ideas, experiences, and even collaborate on projects. The diversity of the participants enriches these interactions, providing a global perspective that is invaluable in today’s interconnected world.

Henry: The networking aspect of the MBA has been another standout feature. The WBS alumni network and sector-specific groups are incredibly supportive, hosting events on and offline that make it easy to connect with others. I’ve really enjoyed meeting people from different cohorts and sharing advice and experiences. Everyone I’ve met has been open, approachable, and willing to help. Whether it’s a quick chat after a session or a more formal networking event, the connections I’ve made feel genuine and valuable. The programme has reinforced how important it is to foster authentic connections and cultivate relationships with people who share your drive to grow and make an impact.

What do you think about the structure and pace of the Accelerator MBA programme?

Caroline: The programme’s structure is designed with working professionals in mind, which I greatly appreciate. WBS offers flexibility through assignment extensions and deferral policies, accommodating our busy work schedules. This adaptability not only reduces stress but also allows me to engage more fully with my studies and networking opportunities. Furthermore, the diverse range of elective options enables me to tailor my learning experience to align with my interests and career goals, ensuring that I can pursue subjects that resonate with my professional aspirations.

What’s next for you in your MBA journey?

Henry: With six of the eight required modules behind us, I’m excited to dive into the electives soon. I’ve chosen to focus on sustainability and finance, two areas I’m passionate about and keen to explore further. One elective I’m particularly looking forward to is the Venture Capital module in California. It’s a fantastic opportunity to network with VCs and learn about the fast-paced start-up environment, which is something I’m eager to immerse myself in. I’m also excited to see how the electives build on the foundation we’ve already established.

Any final thoughts?

Henry: The Accelerator MBA has been a whirlwind so far, but it’s also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I’ve gained new skills, new perspectives, and new connections that I know will continue to shape my personal and professional journey. It’s exciting to think about what’s still to come as we move into the next phase of the programme.

Caroline: My MBA experience at WBS has profoundly impacted my networking opportunities. The strong alumni network, supportive career services, and flexible programme structure have all contributed to a rich environment for professional growth and connection. As I continue my journey, I am excited to leverage these relationships and insights to advance my career.
