The PPE Society Speaker Series: Michael Woodford

Monday, 21st October.
6.30 - 10.00pm
MS.02 - Mathematics and Statistics Building

The Warwick PPE Society Speaker Series is proud to announce that this year's inaugural lecture will be given by Michael Woodford MBE, ex-CEO of corporate giant Olympus and the man who blew the whistle on its $1.7bn fraud - the first CEO in history to become a whistleblower of his own corporation.

In 2011 and as CEO of the corporate giant Olympus, Woodford discovered $1.7bn of fraud at the very top of the organisation - the biggest corporate fraud in Japanese history. Unable to resolve the situation internally, he went to the Financial Times.

The FT's front page feature the next day triggered a media explosion.

The news of fraud wiped out 80%, or $7bn, off of Olympus' share price. At this inaugural lecture, Woodford will recount his extraordinary tale in person. His story is shortly to be made into a major motion picture, but this talk offers an unmissable opportunity to hear the tale in person.

This is also a perfect opportunity to get to grips with international business, especially corporate governance, invaluable for internship applications.

Alongside the upcoming movie, Woodford has written a bestselling book, Exposure, about the Olympus scandal. There will be a book signing shortly before and after the talk where you will have the invaluable opportunity to pick up a personalised copy.

David Giampaolo, CEO of Pi Capital, said of Woodford:

"I've had the honour of hosting six Nobel Prize winners, three US Presidents, two Heads of State and an Archbishop as well as many leading commentators from the fields of economics, finance, politics and civic society and Michael Woodford stands out as one of the most captivating and interesting speakers myself and Pi members have been lucky enough to hear from in Pi's history."

Seats will be a premium at this event and with a prompt start at 7pm we advise arriving at 6.30pm to guarantee a place.
