The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World

It's no secret that we're pushed to the limit. We feel rushed, overwhelmed, and perennially behind. So we keep our heads down, focused on the next thing and the next, without a moment to breathe.

How can we break out of this endless cycle and create the kind of interesting, meaningful lives we all seek?

In her new book, The Long Game, top business thinker and career expert Dorie Clark shows how long-term thinking is what will help—in those darkest moments of doubt—to keep prioritizing what matters most, doing small things over time to achieve our goals, and being willing to keep at them, even when they seem pointless, boring, or just plain hard.

Dorie will join us on 9th November to give us all much-needed guidance to keep our eyes on the prize! Her approach focuses on three major steps:

  • Creating White Space: If we’re too busy and frenzied to think, we will be stuck with a short-term mindset. Clark shares practical tools and specific ways to get more comfortable saying no and making time to think more broadly.
  • Focusing Where It Counts: Clark's advice is to "optimize for interesting." At Google, employees can spend "20% time" on new ideas and projects, but anyone can use this strategy to set aside time for experimentation.
  • Keeping the Faith: Strategic patience is the key to persevering when we’ve hit a plateau (or start slipping backwards). Failure feels awful but the secret, Clark reveals, is understanding the crucial difference between that and experimentation—because if we’re learning, we’re not actually failing.

"Big goals may seem—and frankly are—impossible in the short term. But few realise that with small, methodical steps taken day after day, almost anything is attainable, and frequently sooner than we might imagine." Dorie Clark
