Luca Garza
Associate Director at Collins Aerospace
Executive MBA (2021 - 2023)

I have an academic background in Economics and Business Administration, with a strong focus on supply chain and project management. My career has been centered around the aerospace industry, where I’ve had the opportunity to work on complex manufacturing operations. I studied in Italy and decided to move to the UK to pursue my career goals. I chose to further my education through an Executive MBA to refine my leadership skills, expand my network, and gain strategic insights to accelerate my career progression.

My role evolved significantly after completing the MBA. I moved into a site leadership position, where I now oversee a manufacturing plant with 150 employees. WBS played a crucial role in this transition, particularly by strengthening my strategic thinking, financial acumen, and leadership skills. The network I built during my MBA was also invaluable in gaining different perspectives on leadership and business challenges.

What are some of the key achievements or milestones in your career so far?

I’ve had the opportunity to work in Italy, Poland, and the UK, which has given me valuable international experience and a global perspective. One of the highlights of my career was working as the Executive Assistant to our VP, which allowed me to travel frequently and gain exposure to different parts of the business. Currently, one of my greatest achievements is leading a team of 150 people as Site Director, where I can influence the direction of the business and contribute to its success on a larger scale.

What are your future career goals or aspirations?

I want to continue progressing in my career while keeping the journey as exciting and challenging as possible. I’ve always dreamed of working in aerospace, and I’m now able to pursue that childhood passion. I find leadership to be a natural fit for me, and I want to use my position to serve the community, making sure we’re doing the right things for the people and leading with integrity and purpose. Ultimately, through our work, we want to change the way things are done. As WBS reminded us during the MBA, we are Change Makers, and I want to challenge the status quo to create a better future for both people and the planet. This is the contribution I want to make.

Are there any specific skills or knowledge you gained from your time at WBS that have been particularly valuable?

WBS provided me with strong foundations in several key areas that have been essential in my career. One area that has been particularly valuable is strategic management. The MBA equipped me with the tools to assess complex business environments, define strategic goals, and implement plans that align with organisational vision. In my current role as Site Director, this skill is crucial. Every day, I need to ensure that our operations are not only efficient but also aligned with the broader goals of the company. Strategic management helps me make informed decisions, set clear priorities for my team, and ensure we’re moving toward long-term growth. This skill enables me to navigate challenges, respond to changing market conditions, and drive sustainable business success.

How has being an alum of our business school benefited you and your career?

Being an alum of WBS has provided me with a strong professional network that has opened doors and created opportunities across various industries. The credibility of the WBS brand has enhanced my profile and helped me build trust with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders. The alumni community has been a valuable resource for exchanging ideas, gaining insights, and even forming collaborations. Additionally, the knowledge and skills I gained during my time at WBS continue to shape my approach to leadership and strategic decision-making. The school instilled a mindset of continuous learning and improvement, which I carry with me in every stage of my career.

What are some of your most memorable experiences or highlights from your time at WBS?

My time at WBS was filled with unforgettable moments, especially shared with my cohort of 47. One of the highlights was the final barbecue, which was a perfect way to celebrate the culmination of our hard work. I also have fond memories of the late nights spent working on group assignments, where we bonded and pushed each other to do our best. The international modules in Helsinki and Vancouver were particularly memorable, as they gave us the opportunity to experience business practices in different cultural contexts and learn from experts across the globe. These experiences not only enriched my academic journey but also created lasting friendships and professional connections.

What advice would you give to current students?

My advice would be to enjoy every moment of the journey. Participate actively in every classroom discussion—this is where the true learning happens. I encourage you to do what I did: absorb everything like a sponge. Make the most of the classroom experience, but also widen your perspective by engaging in conversations and experiences outside of class. Go into it with an open mind, and don’t forget to enjoy the social side of things. The evenings spent socialising, networking, and exchanging ideas are just as valuable as what happens in class. Make the most of campus life, and absolutely, take on the international modules—they offer a unique chance to expand your horizons and see things from a global perspective.

My time at WBS was truly transformative. It not only provided me with the technical skills needed for leadership but also the mindset to approach challenges creatively and strategically. The relationships I built during the programme, both with my cohort and professors, have been invaluable throughout my career. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a dynamic and inspiring community, and I continue to apply the lessons I learned at WBS every day in my professional journey.
